SBI PO 2026 Prelims Exam Pattern

The first stage of the SBI PO 2026 recruitment process is the Preliminary Examination, which serves as the essential screening test to qualify for the Mains stage.

1. The SBI PO Prelims exam consists of three core sections: English Language, Quantitative Aptitude, and Reasoning Ability.

2. The exam features a total of 100 objective-type multiple-choice questions.

3. The total duration of the Preliminary exam is 60 minutes, with a dedicated 20-minute time limit for each section.

4. The Preliminary exam is purely qualifying in nature; these marks are not factored into the final merit list.

5. There is no sectional cut-off requirement in the SBI PO Prelims examination. 

Negative Marking Policy: A penalty of 0.25 marks is applied for every incorrect answer. No marks are deducted for questions left blank or unattempted.

Mains Examination Selection Criteria: A category-wise merit list is generated based on aggregate marks from the Preliminary exam. Approximately 10 times the number of vacancies will be shortlisted for the Mains based on these rankings.

SBI PO 2026 Mains Exam Pattern

The SBI PO Mains exam includes both Objective and Descriptive sections, detailed as follows:

1. The objective paper has a duration of 3 hours, while the descriptive test must be completed in 30 minutes.

2. The objective section covers four key areas: Reasoning & Computer Aptitude, Data Analysis & Interpretation, General/Economy/Banking Awareness, and English Language.

3. A descriptive paper consisting of 2 questions is held immediately following the online objective test.

4. Penalty for incorrect answers: 0.25 marks are deducted for every wrong attempt in the Mains exam. Unattempted questions carry no penalty.

Sectional Cut-Offs: Unlike the Prelims, the Mains exam includes mandatory sectional cut-offs. Candidates must achieve a minimum qualifying score in each individual test.

(i) Objective Test: This 3-hour exam comprises 170 questions totaling 200 marks, with strictly timed sections.

(ii) Descriptive Test: A 30-minute writing assessment worth 50 marks, evaluating English language proficiency through Letter Writing and Essay tasks.

Interview Process

Candidates who successfully clear both the Prelims and Mains are invited to the Group Discussion and Interview (GD-PI) session. This stage evaluates the candidate's professional experience, banking knowledge, and general awareness. Scoring well in this round is mandatory for final selection. The total marks for this phase are 20 for Group Discussion and 30 for the Interview.

Final Selection

Following the interview, a final merit list is generated based on the combined scores of the Mains Examination and the Interview round. Final cut-off marks are determined by candidate performance and total available vacancies. Successful candidates will receive an official appointment letter from the State Bank of India for the Probationary Officer position.
