Ohm's Law & Electric Power Calculator

Enter any two known electrical values (Voltage, Current, Resistance, or Power) to automatically calculate the remaining two with step-by-step formula derivations.

Enter Any 2 Known Values

Voltage (V)
12.00 V
Current (I)
2.00 A
Resistance (R)

How to Use the Ohm's Law Calculator

  1. Enter any two of the four values — Voltage (V), Current (I), Resistance (R), or Power (P) — and leave the other two blank.
  2. Press Calculate: the solver picks the matching formula pair, computes the two unknown quantities, and shows each substitution in the Formula Substitutions panel.
  3. Review the result cards for all four quantities with their units (V, A, Ω, W). A value stays at — when it cannot be determined or a division by zero would occur.
  4. Use Clear to wipe every input and result, then enter a fresh pair of known values — results stay at — until two valid values are provided.

Ohm's Law & Power Formulas

Ohm's Law links the three core electrical quantities: voltage, current, and resistance. The classic Ohm's triangle arranges V on top with I and R below โ€” cover the quantity you want and the triangle reads off the formula: cover V to get I ร— R, cover I to get V / R, and cover R to get V / I. Combining Ohm's Law with the definition of electrical power (P = V ร— I) yields three more useful power formulas.

V = I ร— R

Voltage (volts) equals current (amperes) times resistance (ohms) โ€” the base form of Ohm's Law.

P = V ร— I

Power in watts is the rate of electrical energy transfer: voltage times current.

P = Iยฒ ร— R

Power dissipated as heat by a resistance, from the square of the current โ€” handy when voltage is unknown.

P = Vยฒ / R

Power from voltage and resistance alone โ€” useful when the current is not measured.

Worked Example

A 12 V battery drives 2 A through a resistor: R = V/I = 12/2 = 6 ฮฉ and P = V ร— I = 12 ร— 2 = 24 W. These are exactly the calculator's default inputs, so pressing Calculate reproduces the result, and the substitution steps appear in the panel beside the answer cards.

Common Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Ohm's Law?
Ohm's Law states that the current (I) flowing through a conductor between two points is directly proportional to the voltage (V) across the two points and inversely proportional to the resistance (R): V = I × R.
How is electrical power calculated using Ohm's Law?
Electrical power (P in Watts) is the rate at which electrical energy is transferred. It is calculated by P = V × I. By substituting Ohm's law, power can also be expressed as P = I² × R or P = V² / R.
