Laila completed her Master’s degree in Intercultural Education and Psychology at ELTE. We invited her to share her personal experience of studying abroad in Hungary.
Tell us a bit about yourself. What is your name? How old are you? Where do you come from?
My name is Laila Rizvi, and I am originally from Karachi, Pakistan.
What is the name of your university, study programme, which discipline? When did you start studying?
I am currently enrolled in the Intercultural Education and Psychology Master’s programme at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) in Budapest, Hungary.
What made you choose this programme? How did you decide?
The joint degree opportunity and the comprehensive curriculum were my primary motivations. I chose this program specifically because it provides essential insights into educating young people in our increasingly globalized world.
Did you find your study programme on Online Result? If so, how then did Online Result help you in your decision process?
Yes. There were many programs to choose from, but the intuitive search portal made it incredibly easy to navigate my options and ultimately select this degree programme.
What were the main challenges you had to face before being accepted to your university?
The most challenging part of the process was handling the administrative paperwork and coordinating correspondence with the university.
Did you take a language test (e.g. TOEFL, IELTS) when applying for the programme? If yes, which one did you choose, why and how was your experience with it?
Regarding the IELTS requirement: yes, it went well. I scored a 7.5, so the testing process was a fairly pleasant experience for me.
What are three things you like most about the university? Why?
I particularly appreciated the academic faculty, the course structure, the beautiful location, and the rich, diverse cultural environment.
If you could improve anything about the university, what would it be?
The language barrier was an initial challenge. I believe making resources more accommodating would greatly benefit international students.
What are three things you like the most about the city?
- Historic buildings
- Transportation
- Reasonable cost of living
How would you rate your experience on a scale from zero to ten (0 – It is/was a total disaster, 10 – I have/had the time of my life)? Why?
My rating for this experience is 9 out of 10.
What would be your advice for students from your country that consider studying abroad?
My advice is to explore all available options thoroughly. Spend time researching universities and portals, and be sure to gather detailed information regarding tuition costs and potential funding.
Is there anything that you would do differently if you could do it over again?
Do I have any regrets? No, not at all.
What are your future plans after graduating?
I am currently looking into pursuing a PhD in Education and Psychology.
