If you are an international student from an EU/EEA country planning to study abroad in Germany, you have good news: you are exempt from the requirement to obtain a German student visa.
If you are a non-EU/EEA citizen planning to pursue a long-term degree in Germany, read on to discover the essential steps and documentation required to secure your German student visa successfully.
1. Apply to a German university and get your acceptance letter
Before starting your visa application, you must finalize your choice of study destination. Once you receive your official acceptance letter from a German university, you will have the core document required to begin your visa application process.

There are three primary categories of student visas available for those planning to study in Germany:
Student Applicant Visa
The Student Applicant Visa is intended for those who have not yet been formally admitted to a university. This visa is ideal if you are visiting to attend entrance exams, tour university campuses, or finalize your study plans within the country.
The student applicant visa generally grants an initial stay of three months, which may be extended by up to six months while you finalize your university application process.
Student Visa
If you have already secured admission to a degree program or foundation course, you should apply for the standard student visa. Valid for three months, it serves as your entry permit; upon arrival, you must apply for a residence permit to continue your studies. This is the most common visa type for international students in Germany.
Language Course Visa
The Language Course Visa is designed for students traveling to Germany specifically to attend intensive language studies. This visa remains valid for a maximum duration of one year.
3. When and where to apply for the German student visa?
To apply, contact the German embassy or consulate in your home country. Check their official website for available time slots and schedule your mandatory visa interview well in advance.
We strongly advise submitting your student visa application at least three months before your planned arrival date. Please note that processing times can take up to 25 days, depending on your location.
Once submitted, your application and supporting documents will be forwarded to the local Immigration Office in your university city for review before being returned to your local embassy or consulate.
Tips about my visa application:
- If you complete your study, you have the opportunity to extend your residence permit for a maximum period of three years, while you are responsible to seek employment in the field you studied.
- In addition to the student visa, you will also have to get health insurance and prove your German language skills. You will need start learning German before arriving in the country, especially knowing that English is not widely spoken in all German cities.
4. Language requirements for studying in Germany
For long-term visas, you will need to demonstrate basic proficiency in German. You must submit valid test results (issued within the last four years) to meet this standard.

- KCSE certificate from KNEC
- TestDAF
This requirement often applies even if your degree is taught in English. During your embassy interview, you may be expected to demonstrate your ability to communicate using basic, conversational German expressions.
5. Documents required for a student visa in Germany
To study at a German university, you must obtain the appropriate visa. For your application, be prepared to submit a comprehensive set of personal and academic documents.

- Proof of financial resources to support your studies (around 10,236 EUR per year)
- Transcript of certificates that state your past academic background, achievements and qualifications
- In case you enrol in a programme taught in German: certificate of German language proficiency
- Filled-in application form
- A valid passport

- Two photographs
- Letter of admission from the university

6. Apply for a work permit in Germany
EU and EEA students may work in Germany without restriction. For non-EU/EEA students, employment is limited to 120 full days or 240 half days per year, which equates to approximately 20 hours of work per week during the semester.
If you wish to exceed these working hours, you must seek formal authorization from both the 'Agentur für Arbeit' (Federal Employment Agency) and the local foreign authority.
7. Conditions to apply for a German residence permit
A residence permit is mandatory for most non-EU/EEA students planning to stay in Germany for longer than 90 days. This must be applied for shortly after your arrival in the country.
To apply for your German residence permit, ensure you have gathered all the necessary supporting documents, including proof of health insurance and financial stability.
