Study a Master's at Koc University, Turkey

About you

Tell us a bit about yourself: What is your name, age, and where are you from?

My name is Imran Khan. I am turning 25 on February 20, 2015, and I am from Pakistan.

Where are you currently studying? What is your university, program, and the duration of your degree?

Currently, I am pursuing a Master of Science in Optoelectronics and Photonics Engineering at Koç University in Istanbul, Turkey. I am in my third semester and anticipate graduating by summer 2015.

What motivated you to pursue your studies abroad?

My career goal is to become a researcher in the field of Photonics. Seeking advanced international exposure was a natural step toward achieving that ambition.

Searching for study options

How did you discover your study program, and why did you choose this specific university?

I found the OnlineResult platform while searching for scholarship opportunities. It helped me identify an ideal university and program that aligned with my interests. I ultimately chose Koç University due to its exceptional Photonics curriculum and a generous scholarship package. Furthermore, living in Istanbul had always been a lifelong dream.

Were you familiar with this university or program before using OnlineResult?

No, I was not aware of this institution before discovering it through OnlineResult.

At what stage of your application process did you utilize OnlineResult?

I used OnlineResult from the very beginning. It directed me to Koç University and provided clarity on program requirements and critical application deadlines.

Deciding for a university

What were your top priorities when selecting a university and program (e.g., academic quality, location, funding, or facilities)?

My primary focus was the quality of the research program, followed by university rankings, the availability of financial aid, and the overall lifestyle of the city and country.

Was this your first choice? Which other universities did you consider, and why did you settle on this one?

I had received two other acceptances and one conditional offer in Europe, but they lacked sufficient financial support. When comparing the programs, Koç offered superior curriculum standards and a better global ranking, making my final decision straightforward.

Did you always plan to study in this specific country and city, or was the decision finalized later?

I wasn't initially certain about which country to choose, but I am very happy to have landed in Istanbul.

Did you take a language proficiency test like TOEFL or IELTS? How was that experience?

Yes, I took the TOEFL as it is a common requirement for international studies. The process was straightforward, and I achieved a score that exceeded the university's requirements.

Recommendations

What advice do you have for students from your country considering international study?

I highly recommend studying abroad to gain insight into the rapidly advancing world of science and technology. Beyond academic growth, living in a new culture broadens your perspective, challenges you, and helps you form global connections, ultimately contributing to a better understanding of the world.

How did you finance your studies, and what financial tips would you share with future students?

Securing a full scholarship is undoubtedly the best outcome. While many students self-finance, I strongly encourage future applicants to strive for scholarships, as they allow you to focus entirely on your academics rather than worrying about daily living expenses.

Would you recommend this university? How would you rate your experience on a scale of 0 to 10?

I highly recommend Koç University. Given its strong global reputation, high-quality programs in Engineering and the Sciences, and a world-class business school, I consider it among the best universities for graduate studies internationally.

Is there anything you would do differently if given the chance?

I might have considered the USA to experience their education system, but if I were looking to build a stable and happy family life, I would choose Istanbul again without hesitation.

What was the biggest surprise during your study abroad adventure?

The quality of life provided by the university has been a wonderful surprise. I have truly enjoyed the high standard of both campus life and academic rigor.
