Studying Sociology in the Czech Republic: A Student’s Journey at Masaryk University

Marianne completed her Master’s degree in Sociology at the prestigious Masaryk University. After finding the programme through Online Result, she shared her personal journey regarding the search and application process for studying abroad:

"My name is Marianne, a 23-year-old student from the Netherlands. In September 2013, I began my Master’s in Sociology at Masaryk University in Brno, Czech Republic, and graduated from this two-year programme last summer. My interest in global travel and cross-cultural discovery was sparked during my Erasmus exchange in Maribor, Slovenia, while pursuing my Bachelor’s degree. The thrill of succeeding academically in a foreign country, forging international friendships, immersing myself in local culture, and sharpening my language skills was an experience I couldn't wait to repeat.

Living at home with my parents in the Netherlands made me realize that studying abroad was the perfect way to build independence and personal resilience. Post-Erasmus, I wanted to experience the world not as a tourist, but as a local. I began seeking out Master’s programmes in the social sciences that would complement my Bachelor’s in Human Resource Management.

I discovered the Online Result website, which provided a comprehensive and clear overview of English-taught Master’s degrees worldwide. I specifically sought a smaller city in Central or Eastern Europe, which led me to Brno. Between the stellar reviews, the flexible study programmes, and my passion for exploration, enrolling at Masaryk University was an easy decision.

While I considered other institutions, many lacked fully English-taught curricula or didn't align with my specific academic interests. I also preferred avoiding the typical tourist hubs, which narrowed my search and ultimately made choosing Masaryk University a straightforward process.

The application process involved typical bureaucratic steps—such as diploma recognition, transcript translations, and a motivation letter—but the university coordinator was incredibly responsive and supportive. Once I received my formal acceptance, securing suitable accommodation was quick and stress-free.

For two years, I rented a private apartment just a ten-minute walk from the city center, which was ideal given the central location of the Faculty of Social Studies. While not dirt cheap, the cost of living in Brno remains very reasonable compared to the Netherlands.

For those on a stricter budget, shared flats or student dorms are excellent, affordable options. Overall, Brno proved to be the perfect study destination thanks to its efficient public transport, reasonable living costs, and convenient, low-cost flight connections to the Netherlands.

My lectures were led by professional, fluent English-speaking instructors. The Sociology programme emphasizes independent research and self-study, with an average of three lectures per week. I highly recommend this course to motivated students who are comfortable managing their own time and workload efficiently.

This academic freedom is a major perk, though it comes with strict deadlines and a heavy volume of weekly reading. Whenever I encountered challenges, the faculty was incredibly helpful and supportive, especially during the initial adjustment period when navigating the rigorous academic standards.

I self-funded my studies, though I did receive a modest housing allowance of roughly 120 EUR per semester from the Czech government. Overall, my total expenses were comparable to studying in the Netherlands. Securing a scholarship, however, would certainly make covering living costs even more manageable.

I wholeheartedly recommend studying abroad to anyone who is academically driven, eager to embrace diverse cultural perspectives, and ready to step outside their comfort zone without getting easily homesick.

The university and local student organizations in Brno are dedicated to your success, so be sure to utilize their services and get involved. While there are challenges and not every interaction will be perfect, these ups and downs are all part of the invaluable life experience of living abroad.

On a scale of 0 to 10, I would rate my experience an 8. I was thoroughly satisfied with the quality of the curriculum, the faculty, and life in Brno. If I had to make the choice again, I wouldn't change a thing.
