Hi, I’m Chizobam Ezechukwu, but please call me Chizzy—it’s a name that sticks, just like cheese! My journey as an international student began in Nigeria, where I enjoyed a comfortable life surrounded by family and a promising career in Finance.
Driven by a desire for growth, I made the bold decision to study abroad. I pivoted back to my true passion by pursuing a Master’s degree in Environmental Management at the University of Hertfordshire in the UK. I funded my studies through personal savings and family tsupport, and winning the 2023 EUR 1000 Online Result Grant was a life-changing boost that helped turn my academic aspirations into reality.
How I discovered my passion for Environmental Management
Growing up in Nigeria's oil-rich Niger Delta, I witnessed firsthand the devastating impacts of environmental degradation, from water scarcity to public health crises caused by poor sanitation. It was heartbreaking to see that despite existing environmental laws, enforcement remained alarmingly weak.
The proverb, “We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children,” completely shifted my perspective. It made me realize that I have a moral responsibility to advocate for the planet and educate others on the critical importance of environmental stewardship.
Why I chose the UK to study abroad?
I conducted extensive research and ultimately chose the UK for its globally respected higher education system, which offers unparalleled expertise in environmental policy.
In my search, I discovered that many Environmental Management programs lack accreditation from key bodies like CIWEM or IEMA. I selected the University of Hertfordshire specifically for its industry-recognized accreditation. Additionally, its proximity to London provides the perfect balance of academic excellence and abundant opportunities for part-time work.
How is my international experience so far?
My transition to life in the UK has been a rewarding journey filled with growth. While I deeply miss home, I’ve found comfort in my passions—cooking for friends, listening to country music, and reading—which keep me grounded. This international experience has fundamentally reshaped my perspective on education and cross-cultural collaboration.
What challenges were there, and how I overcame them?
Adjusting to life far from family, navigating cultural differences, and enduring the harsh British winters has been tough. Some days are still challenging, but I quickly learned a vital lesson: there is great strength in asking for help when you need it.
The high volume of online coursework was initially isolating, and transitioning to a Master’s level required a shift toward a more self-directed, research-intensive learning style. By staying true to the little things that bring me joy, I learned to adapt — one day at a time.
The secret to thriving as an international student is simple: never hesitate to ask for support. If you stay silent, no one can offer the help you need.
What are my plans for the future?
Looking ahead, my mission is to build an impactful career in Environmental Management. I aim to gain valuable professional experience in the UK before returning to Nigeria to spearhead sustainability initiatives. My journey is not just about earning a degree; it’s about evolving personally and making meaningful connections across global borders.
