Akash pursued an M.Sc. in Computer Aided Conception and Production in Mechanical Engineering at RWTH Aachen. We sat down with him to discuss his rewarding study abroad experience.
What is your name and age? Where are you from?
My name is Akash, I am 23 years old, and I moved to Germany from India to further my education.
What is the name of your university, study programme? When did you start studying?
I am currently pursuing a degree in Computer Aided Conception and Production Engineering at RWTH Aachen University, having begun my studies in October 2016.
What were your main priorities when choosing your university and your programme? How did you decide?
RWTH is a prestigious, top-ranked institution renowned for its cutting-edge research and development facilities. The specialized curriculum of the CAME (Computer Aided in Mechanical Engineering) program was the primary reason I chose to study here.
What were the main challenges you had to face before being accepted to your university? How did you overcome it?
The biggest challenge I faced was a tight schedule; I had a very limited window to manage the university application process and secure my German student visa.
Preparing my CV, cover letter, letters of recommendation, and organizing student loans was quite time-consuming. Fortunately, through careful planning and determination, everything fell into place perfectly.
What are three things you like most about the university? Why?
I have truly enjoyed my time at the university, particularly due to the expansive campus, the active research environment, and the well-structured study plan.
The CAME curriculum is tailor-made to integrate the latest industry developments. The professors are exceptionally talented and foster a highly engaging learning environment.
If you could improve anything about the university, what would it be? How do you plan to improve it?
The university is outstanding, though I believe the experience would be even stronger if the curriculum incorporated more hands-on practical lab sessions.
What are three things you like the most about the city? Why?
The city is very student-friendly, offering great transportation and a welcoming atmosphere. Plus, Aachen is famous for its Lindt chocolate factory, and the local beer is quite affordable compared to prices back home.
If you could improve anything about the city, what would it be?
Aachen is perfect for international students, thanks to a diverse student body from across the globe. The cost of living is reasonable, and I especially love the ASEAG pass, which provides unlimited access to city buses and trains.
What was the biggest surprise in your study adventure? Do you like it?
I was pleasantly surprised by the organization of the study program. RWTH successfully accommodates students from diverse cultural backgrounds, making for a truly inclusive and well-designed academic experience.
How would you rate your experience on a scale from zero to ten (0 – It is/was a total disaster, 10 – I have/had the time of my life)?
I would rate my experience a 9/10; my journey in Germany has been incredible. Aachen is an ideal student hub and serves as a great base for travel, being located right near the borders of the Netherlands and Belgium.
What are your future plans after graduating?
I don't have concrete future plans yet, but I am eager to travel and explore more of beautiful Europe.

Pontstraße is a fantastic spot for students to socialize, thanks to its many pubs and restaurants. I also highly recommend a trek up the Lousberg, the highest point in Aachen; the peace and quiet at the summit offers a stunning panoramic view of the entire city.
