If you are planning to pursue your education abroad in the United Kingdom, you must demonstrate a required level of English language proficiency to qualify for your visa.

A Secure English Language Test (SELT) is mandated by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) to verify that international students meet the necessary language standards. Unlike standard proficiency exams, a SELT is specifically approved and trusted by the UK government for visa application purposes.

Who needs a SELT?

Students enrolling in academic degree programs, including foundation or pathway courses, are typically required to take a SELT to successfully obtain a UK Student Visa.

Passing a SELT confirms that international students can effectively integrate into the academic community and thrive in the UK education system. Currently, the UKVI recognizes exam boards such as IELTS and Trinity College London as official SELT providers.

The IELTS SELT is officially known as 'IELTS for UKVI'. For specific visa categories, the IELTS Life Skills test assesses speaking and listening proficiency at CEFR levels A1 or B1, providing a clear pass/fail result to confirm you meet the mandatory language threshold.

Who doesn’t need a SELT?

It is important to note that not all applicants for a UK Student Visa (formerly known as the Tier 4 General Student Visa) are required to take a SELT.

Below are the specific student categories that are exempt from the SELT requirement:

  • International students coming from inside the EU, EEA, or Switzerland who do not need a UK Study Visa.
  • Non-EU international students who have been admitted to study a higher degree (at Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD level).
  • Internationals coming to the UK just to learn English for a period of under 11 months.
  • Students under 18-years old, coming to the UK on a Tier 4 Child Student Visa.
  • Students who have studied for at least 6 months in the UK in the past 2 years.
  • Students coming from an English-speaking country outside the EU.

Exemption from a SELT does not mean you are exempt from English language testing altogether. UK universities maintain their own rigorous admissions standards and will still require proof of proficiency via scores from tests like IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, or PTE Academic.

Important note

Following the 2015 updates, the UK government streamlined English testing requirements. If you are applying for degree-level studies—such as Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD programs—at a Higher Education Institution with a Student Sponsor license, you are generally not required to take a specific SELT for visa purposes.

Since most UK universities act as Student Sponsors, they have the authority to determine their own English language assessments. Consequently, you can often fulfill their requirements using results from standard IELTS tests or other recognized certifications.

  • TOEFL iBT
  • C1 Advanced (formerly known as Cambridge English: Advanced)

If your course is below degree level, such as a foundation or pathway program, you will likely need to provide a SELT score from an approved provider like IELTS, Trinity College London, or PTE. IELTS for UKVI remains a globally accepted option for these applications.

Students from the EU, EEA, and Switzerland do not require a visa for study, meaning they only need to satisfy the English language criteria set directly by their prospective university.

Note that significant changes occurred following the end of 2020. As of August 1, 2021, EU and EEA students are no longer eligible for "local" status, which previously included lower tuition fees and access to government financial aid.

PTE Academic and PTE Academic UKVI accepted as SELT

Since June 2020, Pearson's PTE English tests have been approved by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) as valid evidence for meeting visa language requirements.

Different PTE tests and levels are required depending on your specific visa type, with most international students needing to pass either PTE Academic or PTE Academic UKVI.

  • study visa: PTE Academic or PTE Academic UKVI
  • work visa: PTE Academic UKVI or PTE Home A1
  • family visa: PTE Home A1 and A2
  • settlement visa: PTE Home B2

While there is no difference in the exam content between PTE Academic and PTE Academic UKVI, availability varies by test center. If your visa category requires the UKVI version, ensure you select an authorized test center when booking.
