Study a Master's in Educational Quality, in Germany

Personal Background

Tell us a little about yourself. What is your background, and where are you from?

My name is TANGWE Abraham TAMUKUM, and I am a 39-year-old educator from Bamenda, in the North West region of Cameroon. I hold a B.A. (Hons) degree in History and Political Science, along with a Diploma in Modern Pedagogy and Secondary Education.

Where are you currently studying? Please describe your university, your programme, and its expected duration.

I am currently pursuing the International Master's Programme in Educational Quality for Developing Countries at the University of Bamberg, Germany. This two-year course is a collaborative effort between the Protestant Institute of Social Sciences (PIASS) in Rwanda and the Evangelical University in Cameroon. We combine academic sessions in Germany, Rwanda, and Ghana with our ongoing professional commitments.

What motivated you to study abroad?

I sought an international education to gain broader cultural, social, and academic perspectives. Engaging with diverse peers in a multi-ethnic environment has been invaluable. Most importantly, I wanted to enhance my professional toolkit to better empower youth through quality teaching.

The Search for Academic Options

How did you discover your study programme, and what role did Online Result play in your decision-making process?

My search was driven by a desire to specialize in Educational Policy, Teaching, and Administration. I chose the University of Bamberg because it is globally recognized for its excellence in educational quality and hosts world-class faculty. Online Result was instrumental in helping me compare various programs and evaluate my options effectively.

Were you familiar with this university or programme before finding it on Online Result?

Not specifically. I discovered this programme while browsing the university's comprehensive course catalogue available on Online Result.

At what stage of the application process did you use Online Result, and was the information helpful?

I used Studyportal to narrow down my choices and select the ideal university and course. Once I made my decision, I transitioned to the university’s official webpage to complete the application process.

Choosing the Right University

What were your key priorities when evaluating universities (e.g., academics, cost, culture, facilities)?

My decision-making was based on several critical factors: academic reputation, university services, funding opportunities, professional development, and quality of life in the host city. Each of these components played a significant role in my final selection.

Was the University of Bamberg your first choice, and what set it apart from other universities?

Yes, it was my primary choice. While I considered institutions in the UK like Birmingham and Nottingham, the curriculum at the University of Bamberg felt more practical and better aligned with the real-world challenges of education in developing nations.

Did you always plan to study in Germany, or was the location a secondary consideration?

I wasn't initially certain about the location, but after reviewing the course curriculum, I was convinced of its immense relevance. The deciding factor was the programme's focus on improving educational quality through a profound philosophical and professional lens.

Did you complete a language proficiency test (e.g., TOEFL, IELTS) for your application?

No language test was required. As an English speaker from an Anglophone region in Cameroon, and because my programme was conducted in both English and French, I was granted an exemption based on my bilingual proficiency.

Recommendations and Advice

What advice would you offer to students from your home country who are considering studying abroad?

Studying abroad is an incredibly positive step. I highly encourage it, as it provides invaluable exposure, multicultural insights, and the chance to challenge your own perspectives by engaging with a diverse range of ideas.

How did you manage the financing for your studies, and what financial advice do you have for prospective students?

I was fortunate to secure a scholarship that covered my tuition, travel, and living expenses. However, the process was competitive and demanding. My advice to future students is to start the search early, dedicate time to building a strong academic profile, and be prepared for a rigorous, sometimes complex application process.

Would you do anything differently if you had to start over?

Not at all. I would follow the exact same path, as the results have truly made a lasting impact on my career.

What was the biggest surprise during your international study experience?

My biggest surprise was the opportunity to attend exclusive symposiums featuring industry leaders, including the European CEO of Siemens. It was an incredibly enriching highlight of my time in Germany. Were you inspired by the story of TANGWE?
