Studying at Roskilde University: Stella's Student Experience in Denmark

Stella, a motivated student from Germany, moved to Denmark to pursue her academic and professional ambitions at Roskilde University.

What is your name? How old are you? Where are you from?

My name is Stella Bücker, I am 24 years old, and I am originally from Germany.

Where are you studying right now: university and country, academic level

I am currently enrolled in the Master in International Public Administration and Politics program at Roskilde University in Denmark.

How did you decide to study abroad?

Having previously spent a semester abroad at the University of St Andrews in Scotland, I discovered how much I thrive in an international academic environment.

Studying alongside peers from diverse cultural backgrounds offers profound self-discovery and fosters a truly global, open-minded perspective.

How did you decide what academic subject you wanted to study?

I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and chose to take a gap year afterward to gain valuable real-world professional experience.

During that time, I realized I wanted to bridge the gap between my theoretical background and current political challenges to create meaningful social impact. I sought to focus on public service and international institutions while maintaining a strong political foundation in my Master’s studies.

The Master in International Public Administration and Politics at Roskilde University provided the perfect blend of these fields, along with excellent opportunities to specialize in key policy areas for my future career.

How did you look for a university abroad? Why did you decide on this one?

I chose Roskilde University because it was one of the few institutions offering a specialized Master’s degree that seamlessly combines administration and politics at an affordable price point.

Having traveled to Denmark on holiday several times before, I was already familiar with the beautiful landscape and the welcoming Danish culture.

What are three things you like most at your university?

• Roskilde University provides a very social study environment. The students support each other and share their knowledge. Thereby the whole group is getting better. 
• The project orientated learning. 
• The close contact with the professors and their support and interest in the improvement of their students. 

Describe the teaching style, classes, extra activities and facilities provided by your university.

The teaching style here is incredibly critical and collaborative. Professors encourage us to challenge conventional wisdom and engage in interactive discussions where every question is valued.

Project-based learning is a fundamental cornerstone of the Roskilde University philosophy, ensuring our degree remains highly practical and hands-on.

As part of our coursework, we participated in an insightful study trip to Brussels and spent a full day engaging with experts at the European Environment Agency in Copenhagen.

What do you like most about the country you’re studying in?

I have fallen in love with the Nordic culture and the vibrant atmosphere of Copenhagen. It offers the spirit of an open-minded capital by the sea while remaining accessible and friendly.

Navigating the city by bike makes it easy to connect with fellow students and locals alike. These experiences have truly made Copenhagen feel like a second home to me.

What are your plans after graduating?

Upon graduation, my goal is to launch my career in Copenhagen.
