1. What is IELTS?
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is a globally recognized standardized test of English proficiency. There is no "pass" or "fail" grade; instead, it measures your language skills on a scale from A1 to C2.
There are two primary versions of the IELTS exam:
- IELTS Academic – for people who apply for higher education or professional registration in English speaking countries
- IELTS General Training – for people attending secondary education, work experience, or training programmes in English speaking countries
While both formats share a similar structure, they differ in difficulty. Students applying for university admission should prioritize the IELTS Academic version, which evaluates four key language areas:

2. What is TOEFL®?
TOEFL® (Test of English as a Foreign Language) was specifically designed to evaluate the English proficiency of non-native speakers pursuing higher education in the United States.
Today, the TOEFL iBT® test is widely accepted by universities and institutions worldwide, and it is also used for professional and immigration purposes.
The TOEFL iBT® exam assesses four primary skills:
- Reading: 54-72 minutes
- Listening: 41-57 minutes
- Speaking: 17 minutes, answers are registered using a microphone
- Writing: 50 minutes
The full TOEFL® iBT exam takes approximately 3 hours.
It is primarily a computer-based test. While a paper-delivered version exists, it is rare and only available in regions where internet connectivity is not feasible.
The latest addition to the TOEFL® family is the TOEFL® iBT Home Edition, allowing students to complete the same rigorous exam from the convenience of their home. Like IELTS, TOEFL® results remain valid for two years.

3. What is PTE Academic?
PTE Academic is an AI-powered English assessment developed by Pearson. It distinguishes itself through its rapid automated scoring system, typically delivering results to test-takers within five business days.
The test is divided into three comprehensive sections:
- Speaking and Writing: 54-67 minutes
- Reading: 29-30 minutes
- Listening: 30-43 minutes
The entire PTE Academic exam takes approximately 2 hours.
Traditionally a computer-based exam held in authorized centers, the PTE Academic Online was introduced in November 2021 to provide more flexibility for students worldwide.
This is the same high-stakes PTE Academic test, now accessible from anywhere, provided you have a reliable internet connection and meet the required technical criteria.
Similar to IELTS and TOEFL®, PTE results are valid for 2 years.
4. What is C1 Advanced?
C1 Advanced (formerly known as Cambridge English Advanced – CAE) is a high-level exam provided by Cambridge English. The assessment evaluates four core skills:
- Reading and Use of English: 1 hour 30 minutes
- Writing: 1 hour and 30 minutes
- Listening: 40 minutes
- Speaking: 15 minutes
The C1 Advanced is available in both paper and computer-based formats and lasts about 4 hours. Successful candidates receive a certificate based on grades A, B, or C. Grades D and E do not meet the C1 proficiency standard.
To achieve a C1 Advanced certificate, you must score between 180-199, confirming a C1 level proficiency based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Both C1 Advanced and B2 First exams must be taken at official test centers.
Candidates scoring an A grade receive a C2 certificate, while those achieving B or C earn a C1 certificate. Unlike other tests, Cambridge certifications do not technically expire; however, many universities and employers will only accept results from the past 2 years.
5. What is B2 First?
B2 First (formerly known as Cambridge English First – FCE) is also developed by Cambridge English and serves as a primary benchmark for English proficiency at the B2 level of the CEFR.
The B2 First certificate is widely recognized for university admission, pathway programs, and various English-taught courses globally. The exam covers four distinct sections:
- Reading and Use of English: 1 hour 15 minutes
- Writing: 1 hour 20 minutes
- Listening: 40 minutes
- Speaking: 14 minutes
B2 First is available in paper and computer-based formats and takes approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes to complete. A passing score between 160-179 indicates a B2 level of proficiency on the CEFR scale.
Minimum required scores for English language exams
