OICL AO Exam Pattern 2026

The Administrative Officer selection process follows a rigorous three-stage structure: Preliminary Exam, Mains Exam, and a final Interview. Refer to the tables provided below for complete details on the marking scheme, question distribution, and time allotment for each stage.

Stage 1: Prelims Exam

  • There are three sections in the Preliminary Examination: Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude and English.
  • Each section has its own sectional timing, which is 20 minutes.
  • Each correct answer gives 1 mark.
  • For each incorrect answer, 0.25 marks will be subtracted.

Stage 2: Mains Exam

Descriptive Test (English Language)

To advance to the Descriptive Test and the interview round, candidates must achieve the minimum sectional qualifying marks in the Objective Test.

  • The Duration of the Descriptive test is 30 minutes
  • The total marks of the test are 30
  1. Letter Writing: 10 marks
  2. Essay Writing: 20 marks

Minimum qualifying standards for the Descriptive Test:

  1. General: 15 out of 30
  2. SC/ST/PwBD: 13.5 out of 30

The Descriptive Test is qualifying in nature. Please note that these marks are not calculated toward your interview shortlisting or final merit ranking.

Stage 3: Interview

Candidates who qualify in the Main Examination proceed to the interview round, with a capacity of approximately 3 times the number of vacancies per category. Final selection is determined by a cumulative score, derived from 80% weightage on the online exam and 20% on the personal interview.
