SSC Stenographer 2026 Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the SSC Stenographer 2026 recruitment, candidates must meet specific eligibility criteria, including educational background, age limits, and nationality requirements, as outlined below.

Educational Qualification (as on 01/08/2026)

The minimum educational qualification for the SSC Stenographer 2026 exam is a 12th-grade pass (or equivalent) from a recognized board or university. Candidates must be prepared to present original documentation for verification upon qualifying for the exam.

Age Limit (as on 01/08/2026)

SSC Stenographer Grade C: Candidates must be between 18 and 30 years of age. Applicants must have been born no earlier than 02.08.1996 and no later than 01.08.2008 to be eligible.

SSC Stenographer Grade D: Candidates must fall within the 18-27 year age bracket. Applicants must have been born no earlier than 02.08.1999 and no later than 01.08.2008.

Nationality

To qualify, a candidate must be:
(a) A citizen of India, or
(b) A subject of Nepal, or
(c) A subject of Bhutan, or
(d) A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, or specific East African/Southeast Asian countries to permanently settle in India.
Candidates falling under categories (b), (c), and (d) must hold a valid eligibility certificate issued by the Government of India.

Candidates requiring an eligibility certificate may be permitted to appear for the examination provisionally; however, any offer of appointment is strictly contingent upon the formal issuance of the certificate by the Indian government.

  4. To begin with, the SSC Stenographer Apply Online 2026, a candidate needs to provide basic details about themselves, such as name, parents' name, date of birth, email ID, mobile number, etc.

SSC Stenographer Minimum Qualifying Marks

Minimum qualifying percentage marks for the SSC Stenographer Computer-Based Examination are determined based on commission guidelines for each category.

Skill Test in Stenography

Candidates meeting the prescribed qualifying criteria in the written exam will be shortlisted for the Skill Test. The Skill Test is of a qualifying nature, with standards set by the Commission according to candidate categories.

Shortlisted candidates must complete a Stenography Skill Test. Candidates receive a 10-minute dictation at 100 w.p.m. for Grade C and 80 w.p.m. for Grade D, which must be transcribed on a computer within the specified time limits.

Important Exam Notes:

  • Candidates who opt to take the Stenography Test in Hindi will be required to learn English Stenography and vice versa after their appointment, failing which their probation may not be cleared by the appointing departments. Candidates have to work as English/ Hindi stenographers as per the functional requirement of the User Office, irrespective of the medium of the Skill Test of the candidate during the examination.
  • The skill test will be held at the Commission’s Regional/Sub-Regional Offices or at other Centres (s) as may be decided by the Commission.
  • Detailed instructions regarding the Skill Test will be sent by the concerned Regional/Sub-Regional Offices of the Commission to the candidates called for the Skill Test.
