SSC Stenographer 2026 Eligibility Criteria

Candidates must meet specific eligibility requirements to qualify for the SSC Stenographer 2026 recruitment. The primary criteria are listed below:

Educational Qualification (as on 01/08/2026)

Applicants must hold at least a 12th-grade qualification or equivalent from a recognized board or university. You must be prepared to present original educational documents for verification following the successful completion of the SSC Stenographer 2026 Exam.

Age Limit (as on 01/08/2026)

SSC Stenographer Grade C: Eligible candidates must be between 18 and 30 years of age. Applicants must have been born no earlier than 02.08.1996 and no later than 01.08.2008 to be eligible.

SSC Stenographer Grade D: The age requirement for the Grade D post is 18 to 27 years. Candidates must have been born between 02.08.1999 and 01.08.2008 to qualify for application.

Nationality

Applicants must meet the following citizenship requirements:
(a) A citizen of India, or
(b) A subject of Nepal, or
(c) A subject of Bhutan, or
(d) A person of Indian origin who migrated from Pakistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, or specific East African nations (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia, and Vietnam) with the intention of permanent settlement in India.
Candidates falling under categories (b), (c), and (d) must possess an eligibility certificate issued by the Government of India.

While candidates requiring an eligibility certificate may be allowed to sit for the examination, any offer of appointment is strictly conditional upon the formal issuance of the eligibility certificate by the Government of India.

SSC Stenographer Application Fee 2026

The application fee for the SSC Stenographer 2026 exam is Rs. 100/- for General and OBC categories. Female candidates and applicants from the SC/ST/PWD/Ex-servicemen categories are fully exempt from the application fee.

Photograph Requirements - Candidates must upload a recent photo against a white or light-colored background. The file size must be between 4 kb and 12 kb, with dimensions of 100x120 pixels.

Signature Specifications - Signatures must be made using black or blue ink on white paper. The scanned JPG file must range from 1 kb to 12 kb, with a resolution of 40x60 pixels.

SSC Stenographer 2026 Selection Process

The SSC Stenographer 2026 examination is structured into two stages. The first stage consists of an online Computer-Based Examination (MCQ format), followed by a practical skill test to evaluate professional proficiency.

SSC Stenographer 2026 Exam Pattern

The SSC Stenographer 2026 recruitment involves two primary levels. The first level is a computer-based objective examination. Candidates who qualify progress to the second level, which is a practical skill assessment administered by the SSC.

The specific details and format for the SSC Stenographer 2026 Computer-Based Examination (Grade C & D) are provided below:

Key Examination Guidelines:

a) The examination features objective-type multiple-choice questions provided in both Hindi and English (with the exception of the English Language section).

b) The SSC has implemented sectional timing: 30 minutes for Parts 1 and 2, and 60 minutes for Part 3. 

c) A negative marking scheme applies, with a deduction of 0.25 marks for every incorrect answer. Candidates should answer carefully.

SSC Stenographer Minimum Qualifying Marks

The minimum qualifying percentage marks required for the SSC Stenographer Computer-Based Examination are as follows:

• Unreserved Category: 30%
• OBC/EWS: 25%
• All Other Categories: 20%

Skill Test in Stenography

Candidates achieving the commission's prescribed qualifying marks will be invited to the Skill Test. The Commission reserves the right to set specific qualifying thresholds for individual exam sections and for the skill test across different candidate categories.

The Skill Test requires candidates to take a 10-minute dictation in either Hindi or English. The speed requirement is 100 words per minute (w.p.m) for Grade 'C' and 80 w.p.m. for Grade 'D'. The dictated material must then be transcribed on a computer.

Essential Skill Test Details:

• Candidates who opt to take the Stenography Test in Hindi will be required to learn English Stenography and vice versa after their appointment, failing which their probation may not be cleared by the appointing departments. Candidates have to work as English/ Hindi stenographers as per the functional requirement of the User Office, irrespective of the medium of the Skill Test of the candidate during the examination.
• The skill test will be held at the Commission’s Regional/Sub-Regional Offices or at other Centres (s) as may be decided by the Commission.
• Detailed instructions regarding the Skill Test will be sent by the concerned Regional/Sub-Regional Offices of the Commission to the candidates called for the Skill Test.
