Mastering Fraction Arithmetic: The Complete Guide
Fractions represent equal parts of a whole or a collection. A standard fraction consists of an upper number called the numerator (the number of parts you have) and a lower number called the denominator (the total number of equal parts in the whole).
โ Addition & Subtraction Rules
Requires a Least Common Denominator (LCD). Convert both fractions so their denominators are equal, add or subtract the numerators, and reduce the answer using the Greatest Common Factor (GCF).
โ๏ธ Multiplication & Division Rules
Does not require common denominators. For multiplication, multiply across $(a \cdot c)/(b \cdot d)$. For division, multiply by the reciprocal (Keep, Change, Flip): $(a/b) \times (d/c)$.
