WB SET 2026 Eligibility Criteria

Educational Qualification
- Candidates must have completed their Master’s Degree OR equivalent Examination from Universities/Institutions recognized by UGC.
- Candidates from the General/EWS category must have secured at least 55% marks (without rounding off) in the Master’s Degree OR equivalent Examination.
- Candidates from Other Backward Classes(OBC) belonging to the non-creamy layer/ Scheduled Caste(SC) /Scheduled Tribe(ST)/ persons with disability(PWD)/ Transgender category have to secure at least 50% marks (without rounding off) in Master’s degree or equivalent Examination to be eligible for this Test.
- The Ph.D. degree holders whose Master’s level Examination had been completed by 19th September 1991(irrespective of the date of declaration of result) shall be eligible for a relaxation of 5% in aggregate marks (i.e. from 55% to 50%) for appearing in SET.
Note: Students currently pursuing a Master's degree, or those awaiting final results, are eligible to apply for the WB SET. Qualification for the Assistant Professor position is contingent upon completing the Master’s degree with a minimum of 55% marks (50% for OBC/SC/ST/PWD/Transgender categories). These candidates must fulfill their degree requirements within two years of the SET results, or they will be subject to disqualification.
Age Limit

WB SET Exam Pattern 2026
The WB SET exam is conducted in an objective, multiple-choice question format. The structure comprises two mandatory papers: Paper 1 and Paper 2.
- Paper I shall consist of 50 objective-type compulsory questions, each carrying 2 marks. The questions, which will be general, are intended to assess the teaching and research aptitude of the candidate.
- Paper II shall consist of 100 objective-type compulsory questions, each carrying 2 marks, which will be based on the subject selected by the candidate.
