WBCS Eligibility Criteria 2026

WBCS Nationality
According to the WBCS 2025-26 eligibility criteria, candidates must be:
(a) A citizen of India (by birth or registration), or
(b) A national of other countries declared eligible by the Government of India.
WBCS Education Qualification
For educational qualifications, candidates must hold a recognized graduate degree in any discipline. Furthermore, proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking Bengali is required (except for candidates whose mother tongue is Nepali).

WBCS Exam Pattern 2026
The WBCS selection process consists of three distinct phases:
- Preliminary exam
- Main Exam
- Personality Test
The scores achieved in the Preliminary Examination are strictly for screening purposes and are not included in the final merit calculation. Only candidates qualifying in the Prelims become eligible for the Main Examination.
WBCS Prelims Exam Pattern 2026
- The Preliminary Examination is meant to serve as a Screening Test only for the purpose of selection of candidates for the Main Examination.
- The Preliminary Examination will consist of only one paper, viz., a paper on “General Studies”.
- The paper will be of an objective type consisting of 200 multiple-choice questions. The paper will carry 200 marks and will be of 2½ hours duration.
- The standard of the paper will be of the level of knowledge as expected of a graduate of any faculty of a recognized University.
- The paper will include questions covering the following fields of knowledge:
