WBCS Selection Process 2026

The West Bengal Public Service Commission conducts the annual WBCS recruitment exam. The selection process is divided into three rigorous stages: Preliminary, Mains, and the Personality Test (Interview). Success in each stage is mandatory to qualify for the prestigious state civil services positions.

Stage 1: Preliminary Examination- The WBCS Prelims consists of a single objective-type paper covering General Studies. It features 200 multiple-choice questions, carrying a total of 200 marks, designed to test a candidate's overall awareness.

Stage 2: Mains Examination- The official WBCS Mains pattern has been updated to include a total of 8 papers. The structure comprises 6 compulsory papers and one optional subject (consisting of two papers). Notably, Papers III, IV, V, and VI are objective-type (MCQ), while the remaining papers follow a conventional format.

Stage 3: Interview Exam- Candidates who clear the Mains examination are invited for the Personality Test. This round is designed to evaluate a candidate's mental agility, analytical skills, and overall suitability for administrative roles.
