Opting for trains over flights significantly slashes your carbon footprint. Similarly, prioritizing buses, walking, or cycling over taxis and private vehicles is an easy way to lower your daily impact. 

As a student, I consistently chose the train home—even when it was a longer journey—using the extra time to study or read. I also opted to walk between classes, which was a small but rewarding habit that aligned with my values.

Sustainable travel extends far beyond just choosing your mode of transportation. 

Packing mindfully with reusable items, such as a water bottle or a tote bag, helps eliminate single-use plastics. While it takes some initial planning, these habits quickly become second nature and save you money in the long run. 

I also found that choosing eco-friendly travel experiences, such as camping or staying in hostels, was not only better for the environment but also much easier on my student budget.

How students can reduce their digital carbon footprint

It is easy to overlook your digital carbon footprint, but the manufacturing, usage, and data transmission of our devices contribute significantly to global pollution. 

Studies estimate that digital technology accounts for 1.5% to 4% of global emissions—a total output comparable to that of the entire aviation sector.

Every email, streamed video, and AI request powers massive data centers that consume immense amounts of energy. 

Research from the University of California indicates that AI tools like ChatGPT consume roughly 500 milliliters of water for every 5 to 50 user prompts.

To use AI more responsibly, try to be more deliberate with your inputs by asking clearer, more precise questions, which reduces the number of queries needed.

Simple habits—such as shutting down your computer when idle or repairing electronics rather than replacing them—can significantly reduce your digital carbon footprint. 

What personal habits can make a difference every day?

Adopting new habits gradually can benefit both the planet and your personal finances, leading to long-term savings and more mindful living.

Here is a list of simple, effective actions I adopted during my student years that have stayed with me ever since: 

  • Turning off the water while brushing my teeth
  • Recycling and sorting waste 
  • Reusing bags and glass jars
  • Walking or taking the bus instead of taking a taxi
  • Not wasting food (if the bananas are ripe, they can be used to bake a delicious banana bread)
  • Reducing meat consumption 
  • Turning off the lights when leaving a room
  • Using the 30-minute washing machine programme
  • Going to the gym with my reusable water bottle  
  • Keeping one charger for my laptop, tablet, and phone (luckily, in 2024 the European Union passed a law to reduce electronic waste, requiring devices sold in the EU to use USB-C charging).
  • Buying pre-owned clothes or shoes is also a good decision as the fashion industry is a major global polluter. Instead of buying from mass-market brands, you can look for creative pieces in thrift shops or even swap clothes with others, which can also help you create a more unique style.
