Bill Fisher has spent over three decades at the cutting edge of education technology. A pioneer who co-founded Englishtown.com in the 1990s and scaled EF China into an industry leader, Fisher now serves as the CEO of Quantic School of Business and Technology, the world’s first mobile-first, US-accredited graduate school.

Online Result sat down with Fisher to explore how modern online MBAs are disrupting traditional models, what drives student engagement in digital environments, and how prospective learners can effectively evaluate the quality of an online degree.

  • Online MBAs are no longer about long video lectures, they use interactive, game-like lessons that keep you engaged.
  • Project-based teamwork and global networking are built into the learning experience, so you gain connections as well as knowledge.
  • Studying on mobile makes degrees flexible for busy professionals, without losing academic depth.
  • AI is starting to personalise learning, and in the next few years it will transform how online programmes are taught.
  • The best way to judge an online degree is to speak directly to alumni and hear their experiences.

Turning lectures into games: the secret to engagement

Online Result: What initially drew you to the field of online education?

Bill Fisher: At 19, I enrolled in an Interactive Educational Software Design course, and it sparked a lifelong fascination with the synergy between technology and learning. That passion led me to help launch Englishtown.com during the 90s. After 30 years of navigating the evolution of ed-tech, I have spent the last five years focusing entirely on transforming higher education at Quantic.

Online Result: With an abundance of free educational content available, what is the value proposition of a formal degree?

Bill Fisher: Platforms like YouTube are fantastic for hobbyists driven by personal passion. However, an online MBA provides a structured, comprehensive curriculum that functions as a holistic skill bundle. While you might seek out marketing insights on your own, a formal program ensures you also master critical, non-negotiable subjects like accounting and macroeconomics—areas you might otherwise bypass.

The core issue with legacy online education was simply digitizing traditional lectures and textbooks. While this improved access, it failed to leverage the true potential of the digital medium. Active learning—characterized by highly interactive, gamified modules—is significantly more effective than passive video consumption. With 17,000 graduates, our data confirms that interactive engagement is the gold standard for online retention.

Online Result: How do you maintain high student engagement levels in a remote, digital environment?

Bill Fisher: We have abandoned the lecture-based model entirely. Instead of long-form video or dense reading, we have gamified our curriculum, requiring interaction every eight seconds on average. Think of it as a professional version of Duolingo, designed specifically for complex topics like finance and accounting.

This micro-learning approach is paired with project-based, global collaboration. By requiring students to tackle real-world problems with international peers, we ensure that students remain deeply involved, even when studying subjects outside their professional comfort zones.

“We don’t believe in long-form video or readings. Instead, we’ve gamified lectures and readings, so the average student interacts with our app every eight seconds”

Online Result: Is a mobile-first MBA truly viable?

Bill Fisher: Absolutely. While Quantic is mobile-first, about half of our students utilize desktop interfaces for deeper work. This design offers unmatched flexibility, allowing students to learn anywhere—even offline—and integrate their degree into demanding professional and personal schedules.

We preserve academic rigor through comprehensive faculty support, networking events, and meaningful human interaction, delivering all the benefits of a traditional institution with modern flexibility.

Online Result: Online education is often criticized for being isolating. How does Quantic foster community?

Bill Fisher: Top-tier online programs are rarely isolating. We facilitate constant global connection. A full quarter of our curriculum is project-based, forcing students to build diverse, international teams to solve business challenges. Our capstone “Moonshot” competition offers funding opportunities, and we host frequent international conferences and local meetups. Many of our students graduate not only with a degree but with lifelong friends and business co-founders.

“Students can always connect with peers worldwide. In our case, a quarter of the curriculum is project-based, so students form teams, often across continents, to work on real challenges.”

Online Result: Can you share a success story of a project born entirely from this online collaboration?

Bill Fisher: Many of our Moonshot startups emerged from these serendipitous digital connections. Students are often grouped with people they have never met from different parts of the world. They frequently only meet in person at the final competition, by which time they have already built a fully-formed business.

Our first winner, an EV battery recycling startup, is a perfect example. The lead founder was a strategy professional at Kia in Germany, working alongside teammates from across Europe. That company would likely never have materialized without the connective power of our online platform.

Keeping things simple… takes a lot of effort

Online Result: Is there a risk that online learning becomes bogged down by platform complexity?

Bill Fisher: Many institutions are hampered by bloated learning management systems. We chose to build our technology from the ground up to ensure extreme simplicity. Our content uses narrative-driven case studies, guiding students linearly through the material. This intentional UX design helps students stay focused, and our graduation rates are consistently more than double the industry average. Top-tier online providers prioritize this level of simplicity.

Online Result: Do online MBAs cultivate skill sets that campus programs miss?

Bill Fisher: Remote collaboration is the standout advantage. Modern work is inherently distributed, so the ability to lead and contribute to teams across disparate time zones is a critical competitive edge. Beyond that, we share the same dedication to business fundamentals as schools like Harvard. I firmly believe that as AI enables greater personalization, digital learning will ultimately surpass traditional campus lectures.

“I believe online learning will soon surpass traditional lectures, especially as AI makes personalisation possible.”

Online Result: In what ways is AI transforming the online learning landscape?

Bill Fisher: We are currently in the early stages of this shift. While many institutions remain hesitant, we use AI supplementally to improve mastery. After each lesson, our students must explain concepts to an AI tutor, which provides targeted feedback until the learner achieves full understanding.

The next five years will be transformative. We are actively developing AI to moderate group discussions with the sophistication of a Harvard business case study. Imagine 24/7 access to high-level peer debate, even with AI participants when humans aren't available. This level of personalized, adaptive learning is where online education will definitively move ahead of traditional classroom models.

How to spot a quality online degree

Online Result: For those considering an online program, what advice do you have to distinguish reputable degrees from low-quality offerings?

Bill Fisher: The single most effective method is direct outreach to alumni. Use LinkedIn to connect with graduates; they are generally happy to share their genuine experiences. We actively encourage prospective Quantic students to perform this due diligence because transparency is the best way to validate the quality of our educational experience.

Our net promoter score is 60, outpacing both Wharton and Harvard Business School. While that doesn't make us identical to them, it speaks volumes about student satisfaction. Ultimately, no amount of marketing can replace the honest insights you gain from those who have successfully navigated the program.

“The best way to judge a programme is to talk to its alumni.”
