Expert insights by the University of Portsmouth
It is a question becoming increasingly common for prospective students: how does earning a Master’s degree online compare to the traditional on-campus experience?
To help you decide, we consulted the experts. We spoke with three Course Advisers from the University of Portsmouth — Krishna, Celli, and Madeleine — to weigh the pros and cons of pursuing a postgraduate degree remotely.
The University of Portsmouth offers a diverse range of both on-campus and remote learning opportunities. With their Course Advisers speaking to dozens of applicants daily to help them select the ideal programme, this team is uniquely qualified to guide you through the decision-making process.
PRO: Flexibility around when and where you study
"This is the biggest factor, and perhaps the most obvious," explains Krishna. "When you study remotely, you are not bound to a physical classroom or a rigid timetable. For professionals managing busy schedules, an online Master’s offers a flexible path to upskill or pursue subjects you are truly passionate about."
"Absolutely! Whether you are balancing professional or family commitments, or perhaps working from home, online study provides the flexibility to integrate education into your personal lifestyle," adds Celli. "Furthermore, many universities, including ours, offer part-time remote courses, granting you even greater freedom to learn at your own pace."
PRO: Less time consuming
"There is another aspect to consider regarding time management," notes Madeleine. "Studying online can be far more efficient in the long run. By eliminating the daily commute, you reclaim significant hours each week, which is a major advantage for busy students."
PRO: Promotes better communication skills
"A significant, yet often overlooked, benefit is how remote learning helps you prepare for the realities of the modern professional world," says Celli.
"Some students find the transition challenging at first, but when communicating exclusively online, you cannot always rely on body language or vocal tone. This encourages you to be clearer, more concise, and more inquisitive—all highly valued qualities in the workplace and beyond."

PRO: Allows you to meet a wider range of people
"An online Master’s degree makes high-quality education accessible to individuals from diverse global locations and at various life stages," Krishna notes.
"The benefits of this are immense; you gain the opportunity to collaborate with peers who may have decades of industry experience, or who possess unique insights into professional environments you have never encountered."
CON: Requires more time management
"However—and I believe it is time to address these 'buts'—studying online can be a significant adjustment if you have never experienced it before," says Celli.
"It is less about the technology, which is a common misconception, and more about self-motivation and time management. You may find yourself struggling if you are unable to adhere to a study schedule, even if that schedule requires weekly adaptation."
CON: Not a great fit for all learners
"That is very true," agrees Madeleine. "Some students simply find that they do not thrive in an exclusively online environment, and that is perfectly okay. Many learners draw energy from face-to-face interaction, and may find the experience less fulfilling without that constant physical presence."
"My recommendation is to thoroughly research any online course to see how it cultivates community. Does the programme encourage interaction with tutors and peers? Does it feature live webinars? Always feel free to reach out to the university with your questions. Investing in your education is a significant decision, so ensure you have the necessary information and support to make the right choice."
