
Meet Phoebe from the UK, an enthusiastic international student who fell in love with Danish culture and chose to pursue her Master’s degree at Roskilde University.
We sat down with Phoebe to discuss the inspiring journey that led her to enroll at Roskilde University, where she is currently completing her postgraduate studies.
Eager to help fellow students navigate their own paths to studying abroad, Phoebe shares her personal experience on how she transitioned into life as an international student in Denmark.
What is your name? How old are you? Where are you from?
My name is Phoebe Rose Aust. I am 26 years old and originally from the United Kingdom.
Where are you studying right now: university and country, academic level
I am currently pursuing a Master's of Spatial Designs and Society at the University of Roskilde, Denmark.
How did you decide to study abroad?
I spent an Erasmus year in Copenhagen during my undergraduate degree and completely fell in love with Denmark. I discovered this specific Master’s programme at Roskilde University—conveniently close to Copenhagen—which aligned perfectly with my academic interests, so I decided to enroll.
How did you decide what academic subject you wanted to study?
Given my passion for design and sociology, this course was an ideal match. Furthermore, having already lived in Copenhagen, the transition back felt like coming home.
How did you look for a university abroad? Why did you decide on this one?
I researched various programs online to explore my options, but I was primarily focused on Urban Studies. My goal was to find a high-quality program that would allow me to continue living in the vibrant city of Copenhagen.
What are three things you like most at your university?
I have built great relationships with my classmates and lecturers, and I truly value the excellent facilities provided by the university.
Describe the teaching style, classes, extra activities and facilities provided by your university.
The Master’s of Spatial Designs and Society features a close-knit teaching style, utilizing small seminar groups and collaborative tasks. This approach allows us to work closely with peers and faculty on projects tailored to our specific interests, all while maintaining a rigorous academic standard.
What do you like most about the city/country you’re studying in?
I love everything about it: the people, the weather—even the chilly days—and the progressive political outlook. I also appreciate the convenience of living in central Copenhagen while being able to commute to university in under 30 minutes.

What are your future plans after graduating?
My plan is to remain in Copenhagen after graduation and pursue a career in the public sector, where I can apply the insights gained from my studies.
Why would you recommend your university to other international students?
I highly recommend Roskilde University because it is incredibly welcoming. Furthermore, the curriculum offers excellent diversity, real-world application, and a high level of academic support for international students.
What should future students know about the Spatial Designs and Society Master’s programme?
This program uniquely blends social sciences—such as geography, sociology, and anthropology—with the creative elements of design. Graduates emerge as experts in ethnographic fieldwork, prepared for roles as consultants in both the private sector and local government administration.
