Innovative online institutions are revolutionizing higher education. Once viewed as an alternative to traditional classrooms, distance learning is rapidly evolving to meet the demands of the modern, globalized workforce.

In this guide:

  • What does online learning actually involve and why should you consider it?
  • Two leaders in the field share how their companies are innovating and solving problems.
  • What types of degrees can you get online?
  • Do employers respect online degrees?
  • The future of online education.

The stigma surrounding online degrees has officially vanished. Today, pioneers in educational technology are reimagining everything from virtual learning platforms to interactive pedagogy, delivering results that rival top-tier universities.

We interviewed representatives from two trend-setting institutions leading the future of remote education. Kabir Ganguly, Founder and Associate Director, oversees an MBA program ranked in the world’s top 20 according to the Financial Times. Additionally, industry veteran Bill Fisher, founder and CEO, shares his vision for the sector.

What is online learning?

Online learning is the delivery of academic instruction via the internet, removing the necessity for physical classroom attendance. Also referred to as e-learning, remote learning, or distance education, it offers unprecedented accessibility.

How does online learning work?

While some programs mirror traditional classroom structures, the most effective ones prioritize flexibility:

  • The whole class is present for the lesson at the same time, using live platforms like webinars and video conferencing.
  • The instructor leads the session and is on hand to offer guidance and answer questions.

Fisher argues that legacy teaching methods—like passive lectures and static textbooks—are suboptimal for digital formats. A persistent challenge in online education has been maintaining high levels of student engagement.

Instead, he advocates for an active learning approach:

  • “Bite-sized learning” with no long lectures, videos or meetings.
  • Highly interactive: On average, students on Quantic interact with the app every eight seconds.
  • Student collaboration: Students from all over the world work together on team projects.
  • Curricula are set out clearly and simply so students can see how their learning will progress.
  • Framing content as a narrative to make it easier to digest.
  • Self-led learning: Rather than having to attend lessons at set times, online learners can set their own pace and work around their own schedules.

Why do an online degree when you can watch a free video?

Fisher calls platforms like YouTube “incredible tools,” but notes, “An online degree is a comprehensive bundle of skills. If you are pursuing an MBA, you might enjoy marketing, but you also need accounting and macroeconomics—subjects that require structured guidance.”

Ganguly emphasizes that passive video watching rarely leads to high retention. “A professional online degree includes clear learning outcomes. Students are often surprised by the level of guidance and the carefully planned workload, including interactive role-plays, animations, and collaborative activities.”

What are the advantages and disadvantages of online learning

There are several advantages to pursuing an online degree:

Cost-Efficiency: Remote learning is more economical for both students and institutions, with online degrees often costing significantly less than their traditional counterparts.

  • Mobility: Your classroom can be anywhere you can get an internet connection. Through Quantic, you can even get a degree on your phone.
  • Flexible scheduling: With self-led learning you can study at your own pace and when it suits you.
  • Access to top schools:, from the American Ivy League to Oxford and Cambridge.
  • Meeting people from all over the world, among both your teachers and classmates. The course outlook is also global. “In our classes, we use diverse images and global case studies,” says Ganguly. “We urge faculty to avoid focusing only on one region. We encourage you to share your own experiences, bringing a global classroom into the course
  • Online MBAs help students build skills they wouldn’t on campus:
  • Remote collaboration: Being able to do effective teamwork when you’re not in the same office is an increasingly valuable skill.
    • Effective communication, including with people from diverse backgrounds.
    • Self-discipline.
    • Time management.
    • Writing skills.

Challenges and solutions: The new face of online learning

Innovation goes beyond pedagogy. The Quantic app has pushed the boundaries of flexibility and portability, allowing students to access course materials on mobile devices—meaning you can now earn an MBA directly from your smartphone.

Here is how Ganguly and Fisher are addressing common hurdles in the online learning experience:

Problem

Solution

Lack of interpersonal engagement with peers and teachers; lack of a sense of community.

Fisher:

  • Increase collaboration with other students
  • Making sure the programme offers faculty support, events, interactions, etc. in a flexible way.

Ganguly:

  • Offer consistent and present guidance throughout the course.
  • Use forums on which students are asked to post their answers to questions and interact with each other.
  • Small classes ensure interpersonal engagement isn’t overwhelming.

Student engagement with the material has historically been lower online than in in-person learning.

Fisher:

  • Active learning (see part one)
  • Simplified, linear course progression.

Ganguly:

  • A planned learning journey with clear steps.
  • Each lesson focuses on a specific learning point
  • Activities to spark active engagement.

Self-led learning can create a sense of isolation.

The University of Birmingham ensures students are supported throughout their educational journey.

  • There is constant assessment rather than one final test, so you get feedback earlier, and tutors can see how you’re doing.
  • Tutors can monitor if you’re not doing activities and hold you accountable.
  • A Student Support Team monitors engagement and will reach out to students who seem to be struggling.

Technical requirements: Stable internet access and a reliable device are fundamental prerequisites for success.

Fisher:

  • Learning on mobile reduces reliance on online bandwidth, and is adapted for devices most students possess.
  • Quantic allows for offline study.

What can you study? Types of online degrees

The most common online degrees in 2026 are dominated by fields offering:

  • High career flexibility
  • In-demand skills and specialised skills.
  • High return on investment.

Top 10 Most Common Online Degrees (2026):

  1. Business Administration.
  2. Nursing (BSN).
  3. Computer Science and IT.
  4. Psychology.
  5. Healthcare Administration.
  6. Criminal Justice.
  7. Education.
  8. Marketing and Finance.
  9. Social Work.
  10. Engineering/Project Management.

Recognition and credibility

Today, online learning is a recognized and reputable credential. "It’s the same degree an on-campus student receives. Employers don't distinguish between the two," notes Ganguly.

"Surveys of our graduates show average salaries well into six figures," he adds. "Employers across diverse industries actively recruit our online alumni."

Accreditation is the bedrock of credibility for distance education, ensuring that your degree meets rigorous academic standards and is respected by potential employers.

Reputable accreditation bodies include the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), the European Association for Higher Education Advancement (EAHEA), and the Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC).

In the US, regional bodies typically handle institutional accreditation, while specialized agencies focus on program-specific career training in fields like business or nursing.

How to find a good online degree programme

Consult official global rankings to explore and compare your prospective online degree options.

Fisher’s top tip is to connect with alumni. "Use LinkedIn to reach out—you will often get a candid response. No marketing campaign can replace the authentic insights of someone who has completed the program."

Ganguly suggests attending webinars, engaging with recruitment teams, and evaluating the curriculum structure beyond just the school's ranking.

"Ask about assessment types and activities. A high-quality program includes case studies, group work, and simulations. If a university only mentions videos and essays, consider it a red flag."

"Inquire about admission criteria; programs that prioritize professional experience over test scores ensure a diverse peer group."

The future of online learning: The role of AI

Fisher and Ganguly remain optimistic about the future of online education, with AI serving as the primary catalyst for growth.

Both Quantic and the University of Birmingham are actively integrating AI. "We’ve added AI as a support tool," says Fisher. "For instance, students explain key concepts to an AI tutor at the end of each lesson to verify mastery before moving forward."

Ganguly notes, "AI is an essential tool. We teach students to leverage it to fill knowledge gaps and brainstorm ideas. In our health programs, we’ve even used AI to simulate patient interactions, allowing students to refine their diagnostic and treatment skills."

Fisher predicts: "The next five years will be transformative. We’re developing AI to moderate complex group discussions, replicating a Harvard-style seminar environment available 24/7 in multiple languages, with AI-driven peers where necessary."

"Personalization—where courses adapt to each student’s unique strengths and weaknesses—is where online education will leap ahead of traditional campus models."

Ganguly adds, "AI allows for high-engagement activities that were previously too costly to scale. Over the next few years, degree programs will evolve to maximize AI's potential while maintaining a focus on authentic learning."

Conclusion

Online education is a cutting-edge field, and with rapid technological advancements, there has never been a better time to pursue the benefits of a modern online degree.
